This typographic work is part of a larger book project that looks at the Great Depression, our Great Recession, frugality and food. The book project New / Old Hard Times inspired this partial lettering system made with beans, based on Cooper Black Swash by Ian Lyman.

A book of oral histories from the Great Depression as told to Studs Terkel and the New York Times, along with recipes from the stories and a glance at some of the new words that relate to our current Great Recession.
The book is a snapshot of the “old hard times” that might help us reflect on the “new hard times.” It is a memory book of how people made do with very little and some-times even prospered.
